CHALLENGE Lack of as-built information about the type of installed anodes caused persistent ambiguity in tracking anode depletion. Establishing an accurate measure of the current volume of the anodes would establish the required baseline. Facing a short turnaround before an upcoming inspection of the platform at issue, a quick-to-deploy, non-invasive means to collect 3D data was sought.

SOLUTION Luckily, the service provider’s recent success with ROV3D gave them the confidence that it could deliver the desired 3D measurements while fitting within the short turnaround and minimal disruption needed for the established inspection schedule and sensor spread.

OUTCOME ROV3D integration was fast and smooth. Thanks to ROV3D’s ease of use, the crew was able to familiarize themselves with the ROV3D system using pre-recorded training videos, and successfully collected 3D data with confidence. During the collection process, the live feedback assured their ROV team that the data they required was being captured. The task was completed within the existing platform based inspection schedule. Anode depletion can now be reliably tracked from this point onwards.

Better Life Extension Data

CHALLENGE Life Extension decision time is no time for subjectivity. Uncertainty in marine growth loading on older structures inhibits accurate structural loading estimates. Yet non-critical data gathering activities often get repeatedly postponed until they become time critical. The client sought an economical and schedule-friendly alternative to gather information about their aging jacket structure to keep ahead of their planning requirements.

SOLUTION ROV3D’s easy to use capability allowed it to be integrated to an existing GVI inspection. Marine growth thickness was calculated by using the outer diameter measurement from the 3D scan of each member segment, inclusive of marine growth, and the design outer diameter of the member, at given water depths.

OUTCOME ROV3D made it possible to collect objective measurements within an existing inspection. Such objective measures can be used to inform structural loading models to estimate how low-, mid-, and high-end variance in marine growth affects risk models, rather than relying on a single model loading parameter based on subjective visual assessment.

The 3D models of as-found structures help reduce the ambiguity and give enough information to support subsea decisions about the asset life extension.

Extending Cable Life for Offshore Wind

CHALLENGE Understanding the factors that contribute to array cable deterioration is of vital importance to offshore wind farm operators. The array cable movement, and the accompanying dynamic loads and cyclic fatigue can contribute to premature failure, high repair costs, and interrupted production. The client wanted to establish 3D model baselines for future change detection.

SOLUTION The asset owner and the ROV service provider had used ROV3D for a previous campaign and, due to its success, ROV3D was their preferred solution. ROV3D’s performance in the challenging visibility conditions of shallow water made it a good tool to collect 3D model baselines without significantly expanding the inspection schedule.

OUTCOME Over short intervals scheduled during four operational days, 16 CPSes and 23 anodes were scanned. The resultant 3D models empower the asset owner to monitor changes in key cable characteristics like cable catenary, seabed touchdown, and burial points, and conditions like cable protection system damage and marine growth accumulation, over time.

Virtual re-inspection saves vessel time.

CHALLENGE The customer had identified questionable flowline curvature in a fly-over video. Was it out of spec? They didn’t want to send a vessel back to find out.

Luckily, they had ROV3D Recon mounted at the time…

SOLUTION They send us an email, “Wondering if you happened to capture data on the rest of our field.” Why yes, yes we did…. Because ROV3D is always left mounted on the ROV, it was there to collect data throughout their campaign. So we cross-referenced ROV3D’s Dive Log to their exported Events from Nexus, and virtually re-flew the passively collected video.

OUTCOME ROV3D Recon allowed the client to avoid redeploying the vessel and we provided models of the 17 flowline segments they needed. Not one additional moment of vessel time was used. ROV3D - Advanced Software. Simple Kit. Lowering the subsea risk of 3D reconstruction by default.

How 3D “at-hand” translates to getting more done.

CHALLENGE A client was in the process of transferring ownership of assets to another stakeholder. Their due diligence process had identified one asset that happened to be located nearby during an unrelated inspection.

Luckily, they had ROV3D Recon mounted at the time…

SOLUTION The client completed their scheduled tasks, and then after short transit of the ROV, quickly performed live 3D reconstruction of two drop-down spools. After the campaign, a more optimized result was desired and the video was reprocessed.

OUTCOME Because the ROV3D kit was mounted on the ROV, the client was able to quickly add value during an existing campaign. Models of the two assets were delivered and used to support the due diligence process.

Jacket Structure Decommissioning

CHALLENGE Original design drawings of the jacket structure did not reflect its history of accumulated external appurtenances and associated complications. This presented project engineering challenges in decommissioning the decades-old asset. The sheer scale of the structure rendered traditional photogrammetry impractical, in vessel time and cost.

SOLUTION ROV3D was selected because of its efficiency in on-site data collection and its live coverage indication to the pilot, ensuring minimal gaps in coverage while scanning such a large structure, without requiring a technician to accompany the ROV3D system.

OUTCOME ROV3D proved cost-effective and informative. The client was happy with the final deliverables that contributed substantially to the decommissioning engineering planning. ROV3D’s 3D reconstructions were aligned with the existing structural CAD model and offered an intuitive and comprehensive understanding of the target areas.
